What do Corporate Lawyers do?Corporate lawyers are generally of two types, those that work in house in coporations and those who work for legal practices that are engaged by corporations to solve their legal problems. Generally Corporate Lawyers deal with legal issues governed by the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth), the common law, and if the company is listed on the Australian Stock Exchange, then the ASX Listing Rules. In Australia, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) is the government body that supervises and oversees the regulation of Australian Corproations. ASIC also provides guidance to corporations and also policy in the form of Regulatory Guides and Policy Statements. As well as practicising Corporate and Company law, Corporate Lawyers may deal with a range of legal issues associated with the business that they are in. For example an inhouse counsel of a technology company may deal with a intellectual property issues and the inhouse counsel of a property development company may do work associated with property. Both may do legal work associated with common law contracts and employment issues to. Why are Corporate Lawyers critical?Corproate Lawyers make the business world tick. Without them, companies would not be bought and sold, and they wouldn't be able to issue capital. Most importantly, the ASX wouldn't exist without Corporate Lawyers.
